Developing the software that brings heavy machinery to life

For the past three years, Dewi has been part of AXTech's systems department, developing PLC-based control systems for offshore handling equipment. Before joining AXTech, he worked in England and Wales. Today, he is based in Molde, creating the software that controls some of AXTech's most advanced systems.

Creating the brain of the machine

Explaining automation engineering to people outside the industry isn't always easy.

Dewi usually starts with the simplest explanation: someone has to tell the machine when to start and stop.

In practice, his role is to develop the PLC-based control systems that operate winches, handling systems, hydraulic systems and operator controls. As he describes it, he's creating the "brain" of the machine, making the steel structure move exactly as intended.

Following the project from software to operation

For Dewi, one of the most rewarding aspects of the job is being involved throughout the entire project.

He develops the software, runs simulations in Molde, and later takes part in testing the equipment before it's delivered.

The testing phase is his favourite.

"After spending months working on the software, you finally get to see the machine come to life. Seeing everything work as it should when the machine starts for the first time is a great feeling."

Supporting customers long after delivery

The work doesn't end once the equipment leaves the workshop.

Automation engineers also support customers after delivery. If a problem occurs onboard a vessel, the team can often connect remotely from Molde, troubleshoot the system, and in many cases restore normal operation without travelling offshore.

It's a role that combines software development, engineering and practical problem-solving both during the project and throughout the equipment's lifetime.
